בעיני זה אפילו יותר מעניין, כי לפעמים דווקא ה b-sides יותר שווים.

The Pet Shop Boys not only are expecting to release a new studio album in 2012, they're currently assembling a brand-new B-sides compilation — a sequel to 1995′s 2CD set Alternative that will be called Format, and span the years 1996 to 2009 — for release in February, the duo revealed in a new interview this week.

In an interview with Varsity, the Cambridge University newspaper, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe reveal their plans for the B-sides compilation — perhaps a bit prematurely.

"I was listening to some of our old songs recently, because we're putting out another B-sides album in February, like an Alternative part two. But we're calling it Format," says Neil, referring to their classic B-sides collection from 1995.

Chris sounds a little concerned, "We're not announcing that yet, are we?"

"Well why not – these things are usually leaked through some Japanese website anyway. I'd rather it came out here," insists Neil. "It's all our B-sides from 1996 to 2009, starting with 'The Truck Driver and His Mate.'"

"Oh I like that song," Chris pipes up, "It's just our little tribute to Oasis. In fact Jon Savage pointed out that it's the chord change from 'Some Might Say.' Though he'd better not put that in the sleeve notes when he writes them."

Last month, Tennant revealed he and Lowe are now at work writing material for their upcoming 11th album, which they hoped to begin recording this month and then release sometime next year. The album would be the Pet Shop Boys' first since 2009′s Yes. Since then, the duo has released a best-of called Ultimate and their score to the ballet The Most Incredible Thing

Take That have invited their heroes the Pet Shop Boys to support them on their sell-out UK tour.





The chart duo have been chalking up hits for more than a quarter of a century and will perform highlights from their own Pandemonium show when they join the tour.
Take That's Progress tour begins on May 27 at Sunderland's Stadium Of Light, with Robbie Williams returned to the ranks.
The band's Jason Orange said he thought the support act would be too big to agree to perform the shows.
He said: "I'm flattered and very happy they've agreed to do it. They're so talented; I thought they'd be above it and us."
Williams said: "I'm a huge Pet Shop Boys fan so for me it will be an absolute joy to be able to watch them every night."
The duo said: "We look forward to every night being a huge celebration of pop music."

פעם, בשנות השמונים, היה ברשת ג' פלט של מחשב שאליו הזינו כל שיר שנכנס למצעד הלועזי והישראלי.
השימוש בפלט הזה היה בעיקר לתכנית "זמזום הדבורה" שבה מאזינים "היכו" את התקליטיה ואם הם הצליחו הם זכו בפרסים.
ב"זמזום הדבורה" עלה אחרי כל שיר מאזין לשידור והוא היה צריך לבקש שיר שצעד בעבר במצעדים של ג' ואם צוות התכנית לא הצליח למצוא את השיר תוך דקה, המאזין זכה בפרס.
הפלט הזה סידר את כל האמנים שצעדו לפי א"ב ואז ABC ואחרי שם האמן כלל באותו סדר את השירים של אותו אמן.
העמודה הבאה הוקדשה לתאריך שבו השיר נכנס למצעד וזאת שאחריה למיקומו.
עמודה אחרי סיפרה כמה שבועות השיר היה (אם היה) במקום הראשון וזאת שאחריה כמה שבועות הוא צעד במצעד.
העמודה האחרונה, שבקושי רואים בסריקה, ספרה מה המספר הקטלוגי של התקליטון של השיר.
את הדף הזה צילמתי פעם, מתוך אהבה לפט שופ בוייז, כדי שתהיה לי את הדיסקוגרפיה הישראלית שלהם.
שבעה נאמבר וואנז, נכון ל-1991.
אני לא חושב שהם הגיעו להישג הזה בשום מדינה אחרת.

"פט שופ בויז" העלו את שירי הפופ לדרגת אמנות.

אף אחד לא מדבר על יחסים כמו טננט ולואו,
אף אחד לא משלב כך בין שכלתנות לאינטליגנציה רגשית,
ומעטים מבינים כמותם את הכוח שבדרמה..




טעות לחשוב שכוחו העיקרי של הפופ טמון בפזמון.
הוא אולי מנוע הטורבו שמזנק לתודעה במהירות מרבית,דאג לחפור היטב בתת-המודע ולהתנחל
בו במיומנות בעזרת אלגוריתמים מחוכמים, אולם הוא לא זה שלוקח את הפופ אל הנצח;
אל מעבר לשלוש וחצי הדקות שהוקצבו לו מראש.
המטלה הזאת מונחת על כתפי הסי-פארט,המעבר שבין הפזמון השני לבית השלישי ומשם לפזמון החוזר.


אם הפזמון הוא מדע, הסי-פארט הוא מגע; מחושב פחות, אינטואיטיווי יותר.
אם הפזמון הוא התקווה, הסי-פארט הוא התהייה המפוכחת; הרגע החמקמק, הכמעט מלנכולי,
שבו עולים הספקות ומפוגגים מעט את האופטימיות והנאיוויות שמניעים את הפופ.
ואף אחד לא כותב סי-פארטים כמו "פט שופ בויז".

כמו ג'ורג' גרשווין, בארי גורדי ולנון ומקרטני לפניהם, ניל טננט וכריס לואו הבינו את הכוח שבדרמה.
את העוצמה הגלומה בחלק הקצרצר - שברירי שנייה של קונפליקט - שמעגל את הפינות ומשלים את הסיפור.
הופך אותו לאמין, רך ואנושי יותר. מחבר בין החלקים השונים והופך כל אחד מהם למהותי ואפקטיווי יותר.

במשך 25 השנים האחרונות העלו "פט שופ בויז" את הסי-פארט לדרגת אמנות.
הם תמיד נהנים לספר שהם בסך הכל מנסים לכתוב מחדש שוב ושוב את השיר הראשון שלהם,
"וסט אנד גירלז", שמכיל סי-פארט מושלם ומתבטא בשינוי של תו אחד בלבד, שעושה את כל ההבדל
(בדיוק כשניל מתחיל לשיר "You got a heart of glass or a heart of stone", ודופק על הדרך
מחווה ל"בלונדי" ו"הרולינג סטונז").




הרגע המכונן הזה מקפל בתוכו את סוד הקסם הפט שופ בויזי; זה שהמשיך גם לסינגל הבא
"Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)", כשבבת אחת טננט חותך מהפזמון
ל"Oh there are lots of opportunities" והמלודיה נהפכת מבומבסטית לעגמומית,
וללהיט הכי גדול שלהם "It's A Sin" ("Father forgive me", שמספק את הקתרזיס).

הקסם הזה נוכח גם בסינגל האחרון והמצוין שלהם "Love ETC" (מתוך "Yes" שייצא בתחילת השבוע הבא)
ואפילו מפאר את הקאברים שעשו ל-"Always on My Mind" של אלוויס פרסלי
(עם "Tell me/ Tell me that your sweet love hasn't died" שמורגש כל כך הרבה יותר בגרסה שלהם)
ב-"Where the Streets have No Name" של "יו-2"
(שאליו הצמידו כסי-פארט את "Can't Take My Eyes off You" של פרנקי ואלי)
או "Go West" של "וילג' פיפל" ("There where the air is free, we'll be what we want to be").

הסי-פארט מוסיף לשכלתנות של "פט שופ בויז" את ממד האינטליגנציה הרגשית ומבדיל אותם מקבלני
להיטים נוסחתיים. הוא האלמנט שבזכותו מכנים שיר בתואר "פט שופ בויזי" (ע"ע "גירלז אנד בויז" של בלר).





הסי-פארט - מושלם ככל שיהיה - הוא כמובן לא העדות היחידה לגאונות של "פט שופ בויז".
צריך יותר מזה כדי להישאר בטופ של הפופ במשך 25 שנה, גם אם בדלילות משתנה של אוויר הפסגות.
כי לא רק סי-פארטים אף אחד לא כותב כמו ניל טננט; גם על יחסים אף אחד לא כותב כמוהו,
בסיפורים קצרים ואנקדוטות קטנות שמדברים אלינו ועלינו יותר ממרבית יצירות האמנות הקאנוניות.

משפטים כמו "שנינו הפסקנו לעשן, כי זה קטלני, אז של מי בדיוק הגפרורים האלה?",
"אני לא יודע מה את/ה רוצה, אבל אני לא יכול יותר לתת את זה" או
"את/ה אומר לי שאת/ה אוהב/ת אותי רק כשאת/ה שיכור/ה"
מעידים על חדות אבחנה ורגישות ליחסים, לא רק מנקודת המבט ההומוסקסואלית שנוטים לייחס לטננט,
או הניכוס שעשתה להם הקהילה בשנים האחרונות.
You שלו אולי נכתב על גברים, אבל ודאי שלא מיועד רק להם; והוא פוגע בכל מי שיש לו לב.




שלא כמו רוב בני מחזורם (והם התחילו את הקריירה המוסיקלית שלהם אחרי גיל 30),
טננט ולואו מעולם לא השתרכו מאחור, או נגררו אחרי טרנדים. הצרה שלהם תמיד היתה הפוכה לגמרי -
הם הרבו להקדים את זמנם.

הגישה הזו מתבטאת מבחוץ בדרך שבה "פט שופ בויז" אורזים את עצמם גרפית: הצבעים צעקניים
(כתום, אדום, צהוב), העטיפות מושקעות וחכמות (פלסטיק מחוספס ומנוקד, זכוכית חלבית)
והקליפים חלליים, ממוחשבים, מצועצעים ומשועשעים (ואם לא אז מאט לוקאס ודייוויד ויליאמס
מ"הממלכה הקטנה" באים לבקר).

כשפותחים את האריזה ומנסים לפצח את הליבה של הישות הפופית מגלים ש"פט שופ בויז" נשארים רלוונטיים
כי הם מסרבים, כמאמר אחד השירים הגדולים שלהם, להשתעמם; הם הפיקו סרט, הרימו מחזמר,
יצאו לסיבוב הופעות תיאטרלי שגרם להם כמעט לפשיטת רגל,כתבו מחדש את הפסקול ל"אוניית הקרב פוטיומקין"
של סרגיי אייזנשטיין וביצעו אותו עם התזמורת של הנרי מנסיני, ועדיין יודעים איך נשמע הסינגל האחרון של בריטני.

הבקיאות שלהם במרחב העשייה המוסיקלי העכשווי, כפי שאפשר היה ללמוד מאוסף ה"בק טו מיין"
שערכו לפני ארבע שנים, או מתוכנית לילית שהגישו בתחילת השבוע בבי-בי-סי, היא מפחידה.

ההווה מאתגר אותם והעתיד מסעיר אותם. תמיד הסעיר. לא זו בלבד שהם יצרו היפ-הופ, אלקטרו,
האוס וטכנו בזמן אמת, הם עשו זאת תוך כניסה פרטנית ותת-קרקעית לכל תת-ז'אנר שהעשיר את הפופ
שלהם בזווית חדשה - שהם שמחו לספח לעולם המאופיין שלהם. הם היו הראשונים לעבוד עם מפיקים
ודי-ג'ייז בעלי אפיל אנדרגראונדי כמו בובי O פרנקי נאקלס, בראדרז אין ריתם, דני טנגליה,
רולו ודייוויד מוראלס, ולתווך את החזון המועדוני שלהם למצעדים כשהוא מתורגם לפופ מזוקק.
בסוף השנה הקודמת הוציא הצמד סינגל בלייבל הטכנו הגרמני - Kompakt אחת האכסניות הכי יוקרתיות
של מוסיקה אלקטרונית.

בעוד חודש וחצי תבוא לכאן "דפש מוד", עוד להקה שלא נזקקה לפורמלין כדי להשתמר.
להקה שבארץ כבר נהפכה לקונסנזוס ואותה כולם אוהבים: אלה שאוהבים את "יו-2" וסטינג,
אלה שסוגדים ול"קיור" ול"סמיתס" ואלה שמעריצים את "ניו אורדר" ו"פט שופ בויז".

מכל הקבוצות האלה יש רק אחת שהמשפט "היא הפכה אותך למושא של צחוק,
כי אתה רוקד לצלילי דיסקו ולא אוהב רוק" תקף כלפיה; היחידה שיודעת לרקוד.

כאן זה מתחיל. כאן זה גם נגמר.

Can you forgive her הוא השיר האהוב עלי ביותר של הצמד ובכלל, ופתאום נוכחתי לגלות שבהתחשב בעובדה הזו - אין לי מספיק ממנו! מלבד היותו ב-very, כלום. אין לי מספיק גירסאות שלו. האם כך ייעשה לשיר האהוב עלי ביותר מאז ומעולם?
אז המחשבה היתה לקנות את הסינגל המקורי מ-1993, ומצאתי כמה למכירה ב-eBay, אפילו במחירים די נחמדים. הבעיה היא שמצאתי כמה גירסאות לסינגל של השיר, באחת מהן (ואליה אני נוטה יותר) יש את השירים הבאים:

הפתעה כזו נכונה ל-Lorraine Sands, מנהלת הפרוייקטים של חברת Twickenham.
היא עלתה בגורל במסגרת כל האנשים שדירגו לפני כשנה את הזוכים לטקס ה-BRITS בו זכו כזכור צמד הפט שופ בויז, ע"י חברת MasterCard שנתנה חסות לאירוע.

הצמד שר אצלה בסלון את 'It's a sin' , 'All Over The World' , 'Suburbia' ואת 'West End girls' .

זו היתה התגובה של הבחורה המאושרת:
'When I opened the front door and saw Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe standing on my doorstep I thought I must be hallucinating! I've been a massive Pet Shop Boys fan for over twenty years and to have them play a gig right in my front room, for just me and my closest friends, was too good to be true! אלבום פרומו יפני שהופיע בשנת 1988 נחשב עד היום לאחד הפריטים הכי יקרים של הפט שופ בויז, מחירו עומד היום בכ- £1500 (פאונד, כן כן..) אצל האספנים.

למעשה לא מדובר בחומר נדיר או בדברים שאי אפשר למצור באוספים אחרים. מלבד העובדה שהודפסו רק 35 ממנו, לשימוש פרומו ביפן בלבד.
אפילו השם שלו - Totally - שומר על מסורת השמות הקצרים בני המילה האחת, כמו כל האלבומים של הצמד.
העטיפה זהה לעטיפת האלבום - Introspective רק שכאן היא בשחור לבן-אפור.
מאחור - רשימת השירים וכל הפרטים הרלוונטיים ביפנית (אפילו שגיאת כתיב יש שם, ל-Opportunities הם קראו Opprtunities ...
זו ההוצאה הראשונה של הצמד ביפן, על כן היא מאוד נדירה.
על פי אתרים של אספנים - רק אחת ל-4 שנים מוצאים עותק כזה מסתובב למכירה.
יש רק דיסק אחד יקר ממנו - אוסף שעשה Radio1 שנקרא 'PSB Compiled', ממנו יצאו 20 עותקים בלבד.

Neil Tennant is not a great fan of the modern Christmas pop song. Even though his band, the Pet Shop Boys, have released their own seasonal five-track EP this year, simply called Christmas, he hopes it taps into an older tradition, "There are not that many good Christmas songs around these days. The early Seventies was the real golden age of Christmas songs. That is the tradition that we're trying to be a part of, rather than the tradition of Mariah Carey."

Tennant's perfect Christmas songs, listed here, must adhere to a strict criteria. "The song has to have the word Christmas in it or else it doesn't count. A children's choir helps as well."



But what really defines Tennant's playlist is a sense of nostalgia: "These songs are all about memories for me. Christmas itself is all about memories. It is almost better remembered than experienced."

In a special edition of Dance Anthems, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe - aka The Pet Boys - join Dave Pearce to discuss their favourite dance music tunes from the past 25 years and how club music has influenced their career. In the two hour programme, the duo - who won the lifetime achievement after at the 2009 Brit Awards, tell Dave how a trip to New York in 1983 started their journey into the dance world, leading them to work with the likes of Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Shep Pettibone. They also share their memories of clubbing to tunes by Bobby O, Brothers In Rhythm and Felix Da Housecat and discuss how their contribution to dance music has often been overlooked. The band also tell Dave about their new single and world tour and also share their memories of tracks by Grandmaster Flash, Tomkraft and Rollo; tunes which helped the duo shape their unique sound.
